Weather Warning: Protecting Your Commercial Fleet During Level 8 Storms

← Back to Articles
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued critical weather alerts, with warnings ranging from Level 2 to Level 8 across several provinces, including the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Gauteng. With disruptive rainfall, flooding, and the risk of mudslides and rockfalls expected between 5 and 7 May, commercial fleet operators face significant operational challenges.

For the logistics and transport sector, severe weather isn't just a scheduling inconvenience—it is a safety hazard. Heavy rainfall often masks road defects, such as deep potholes and sharp debris, which can lead to sudden tyre failure or sidewall damage. Furthermore, the risk of hydroplaning increases significantly on flooded highways, putting drivers and cargo at risk.

To ensure your fleet remains safe and operational during these conditions, Field Tyre Services recommends the following precautions:

1. Prioritise Tread Depth: Ensure all commercial vehicles have adequate tread depth to effectively disperse water and maintain grip on slippery surfaces.
2. Monitor Tyre Pressure: Correct inflation is crucial for stability. Under-inflated tyres are more prone to failure when hitting submerged road hazards.
3. Driver Vigilance: Instruct drivers to reduce speeds and increase following distances. If a road is flooded, the safest course of action is to avoid crossing it, as the road surface beneath the water may have washed away.
4. Route Planning: Monitor weather updates in real-time to avoid high-risk areas, particularly mountainous routes where rockfalls are more likely.

In the event of a puncture or tyre failure during these storms, the last thing a fleet manager wants is a vehicle stranded in a dangerous area. This is where Field Tyre Services steps in. We specialise in rapid-response roadside tyre breakdowns for commercial vehicles, ensuring that your drivers are not left vulnerable and your delivery timelines are minimised.

Stay safe on the roads. If your fleet encounters trouble during this period of severe weather, Field Tyre Services is ready to get you back on track.
